Read Dicebox for the sarcastic banter, the intriguing characters, the beautiful and futuristic art, and for a story about women who are living and surviving together despite the very different lives they have led. Why are they not a thing yet? Why are they not top priority? You also get to see the direction technology takes according to Lee. They are married to each other and it works for them, and the story moves on to bigger, stranger things. This isn’t considered an issue by any of the characters in Dicebox as far as I can tell, and it’s refreshing to read a webcomic that is not focused completely on the two of them working out their sexuality and relationship. Griffin and Molly are legally married, though both characters are women and neither accepts their marriage as monogamous. Lee also delves into religious traditions in the future, as well as acceptance of sexualities and gender reinterpretations that are currently oppressed or silenced today. It’s fascinating to see two people who have come together after living separate lives for so long, who have great banter, but don’t necessarily know each other’s pasts. They are married, but they both don’t seem to know much about each other. Griffin and Molly’s relationship is interesting to try and unravel throughout Dicebox. They know how to work the job systems and how to find shelter, and you get to see a side of this future that is probably pretty far outside ‘the norm,’ though the homeless population seems to have way more rights and protections than they do today. I’ve never seen futuristic timelines following people without power before, or at least not people this marginalized.
